Activity name: Community based initiatives for reducing road accident mortality and morbidity.

Operation Area: National Highway No. 8 (Jaipur - Delhi Section).

Planning: The project envisages identifying places almost at every 10 kms forming Sahayta Samooh (SS) comprising of interested and conscientious volunteers to come forward to the rescue of accident victim on NH-8 (Amer – Gurgaon Stretch kms 42 to 248).

At the beginning of this project we had targeted manpower residing on the highway but we observed that public coming from interiors on the by-lanes would cross the road on the other side of the highway without paying attention to the on going traffic. They were ignorant of the fast moving traffic on highways as a result of which more calamities took place. Thus it was decided to educate the public even in the interior of the villages.

Monitoring: Our SS members give response to our call in a positive way which, we feel, show their serious concern towards saving lives of accident victims on Delhi-Jaipur highway (206 kms) on which we have worked since last three years. It is worthwhile to mention here that it is the constant interaction between trust staff and the SS members which has resulted in motivating and sensitizing them to come forward to render instant help to the victims at the accident site. Maximum numbers reside on the highway and are able to reach immediately without losing the initial precious time.

The SS members have been regularly sending us details of accidents, date, time & vehicles involved and also their suggestions on stamped postcards supplied to them by the Trust as also the use of medicines from the medical kit.

Review: In the feedback received through self addressed postcards distributed to them during the training schedules, they have been instrumental in extending a helping hand to innumerable victims, and meaningful results in saving about 150 lives in the past 3 years. Replenishing the medicines for the medical kit was done as per their requirement.
